Called for an appraisal and he had all sorts of theories about a salvage title car I was having appraised (as the BUYER, not the seller) he had never seen which had a bent rear control arm, sway bar, and some body panels replaced at 90 miles. It was a dealer car that was wrecked and totaled during a test drive. He promised me the engine probably had a blown head gasket, piston rings, and probably was about to spin a main bearing. Keep in mind he had never seen the car, all he knew was that it was a low mileage salvage with some suspension replaced.
While he was willing to write the appraisal for what I wanted it valued for so the lien would go through and insurance would insure it, he said he'd rather not. So that means he's 1) willing to abandon his moral obligation to accurately appraise the car for what HE thought it was worth (remember, it had a "blown head gasket" and such) in order to get my business or 2) was trying to get me out of buying the car so he could sell me something he found.
I would avoid unless you need him just to write an appraisal for you so you can work with a lender or insurance.
